Half Space

We will see a scene repeated in less and less space.

Half Space is a venerable handle that is used to manipulate an open scene. There is an initial reference scene that the performers create. It is recommended that the reference scene be a bit curt, have simple dialogue, and have some obligatory action. Since the restriction placed on the reference scene is one of space it is recommended that the open scene use as much of the stage as possible. The reference scene need not be funny and “vanilla” is a common phrase attributed to the reference scene.

The host then indicates that the scene will be take place again but in half the stage space. The content, actions and narrative arc of the reference scene now must be completed in half the space. The host can keep repeating the scene in less and less space until the performers are literally on top of each other.

  • Place the last scene on a chair.

  • Half Life – the reference scene is repeated in half the time.
